“Keeping it local” – at the very core of Distillerie Deinlein! You have to work that little bit harder to maintain your principles. Not so when you have one of New Zealand’s best wine making teams only minutes down the road. We’ve always found great inspiration in everything Mills Reef does, so we jump at the chance to work with them. The spirit of that collaboration is our truly exceptional range of Grape Eau de Vie, our homage to Italian Grappa. We love this range; the distilling process has an unerring ability to draw out the essence of each grape variety and supercharge it – a treat for the senses of any wine lover.
The tastes and aromas of the vineyard – captured in this distillate through the skill of the distiller. He influences the flavour by carefully selecting the heart from each batch as it passes through our pot still.
Made from some of New Zealand’s finest Syrah grapes.
A little background on Grappa and why we respect its origins and its name: It is unknown where in Italy the first grappa was made. Linguistically, the name is not tied to a specific location, but rather to the whole country of Italy. The name Grappa is derived from the Italian grappolo, which means grape. The exact origins of the spirit are unclear; but the first written record of the word Grappa is from 1451 in the last will of a guy in the Piedmont region. Being an Italian word, the correct plural would be Grappe. 29 May 1989; after many years of lobbying the EU laid down decree No 1576/89 giving Grappa name protection as a grape marc spirit only produced in Italy.
